In Hawaii we currently have thirteen locations on the four major islands.  There is plenty of room for Dairy Queen® Orange Julius® or DQ Grill and Chill® locations on the islands of Oahu, Maui, and Kauai. There are currently no opportunities on the Big Island.

In Hawaii we have concentrated on developing our DQ® Orange Julius® concept exclusively. This concept features our Dairy Queen® soft serve treats, Orange Julius® Originals and Smoothies, and the Orange Julius® Hot Dogs and Iron Grilled Sandwiches. We concentrate on the fun stuff! The current locations range from 250 square feet to 1000 square feet in size.

A DQ® Orange Julius® franchise combines our ultra-tempting Dairy Queen® treats with our Orange Julius®premium fruit smoothies and fruit-blended beverages. Orange Julius® is the first name in pure refreshment, and a consumer favorite for over 80 years. With these two big-name brands in your corner, doing business has never been so satisfying!

Dairy Queen® Orange Julius® stores are established in a variety of locations including shopping malls, strip centers, street fronts, free-standing pad sites and other bustling venues that pull in large numbers of consumers, for maximum merchandising impact and impulse sales. With their welcoming decor, on-trend treats and popular beverages, they hold special appeal for shoppers on the go or any guests just needing a quick, leisurely break.

There are five prototypical Dairy Queen® Orange Julius® stores, including free-standing building with inside seating, free standing walk-in building, free-standing walk-up building, enclosed mall and strip center location. Opportunities for development exist that may vary from the typical project.

 

What it takes to be a DQ® Orange Julius® franchisee

Our basic requirements for new franchisees include a review of your background, work experience and financial capabilities. In general, we are looking for:

  • Prior retail or foodservice ownership or management experience
  • A proposed management plan
  • The financial resources necessary to develop and operate the store
  • An appreciation of and passion for building the DQ® and Orange Julius® brands

 

Financial Requirements

To qualify for an individual Dairy Queen® Orange Julius® mall or strip center location, you are required to demonstrate a minimum net worth of $200,000. In addition, you need liquid assets of $175,000 of which a minimum of $125,000 will be used in the project as equity. This amount must be verified as a part of the approval process. Your lender may require additional resources to meet their minimum requirements.

To qualify for an individual DQ® Orange Julius® street location, you are required to demonstrate a minimum net worth of $500,000. In addition, you need liquid assets of $250,000 of which a minimum of $200,000 will be used in the project as equity. This amount must be verified as a part of the approval process. Your lender may require additional resources to meet their minimum requirements.

Here is a breakdown of the financial requirements to own and/or operate a Dairy Queen® Orange Julius® store:

Initial Franchise Fee: $25,000
Ongoing Royalties: 5% of sales
Ongoing Sales Promotion Fee: 5-6% of sales

The DQ® Orange Julius® franchise agreement is a 15 year term or the lease term, whichever is shorter.

Identifying a Great Site

As you know, site selection is critical to the potential success of a new store. American Dairy Queen’s Real Estate Managers and Lease Managers work with franchisees to review our standard site criteria and market trade area for development of DQ® Orange Julius® stores.

If you are interested in purchasing an existing Dairy Queen® Orange Julius® location, below are some of our frequently asked questions (FAQ):

If I am a buyer, how do I start the process?
You must contact the owner of the location. The owner must fill out a “Transfer Request and Release Form” to begin the transfer process. The owner can find this form on the franchisee HUB website located under Facility/Transfer Info, or they may email transfers@idq.com to request the form and the transfer department will email or fax the form to them.

Can I get a list of stores for sale?
We do not provide a list of stores that may be for sale. You may contact owners directly or a local real estate broker for assistance.

What do I do if the location I want to purchase is closed and no longer operational?
You must contact the Development Department at development@idq.com. They can assist you in possible re-franchise opportunities.

How long does the transfer process take?
It typically takes approximately six months before a buyer is able to complete training and facility requirements and ADQ is in a position to consent to a transfer.

What qualifications do I need?
Upon receipt of the Transfer Request and Release Form from the owner, the transfer coordinator will email the transfer information, requirements and transfer paperwork to both parties. There are many more requirements, but as an initial screen it may help you to know the following:

The buyer must meet the following minimum financial requirements to purchase a Dairy Queen® Orange Julius® location:

  1. If more than two years remain on the existing lease, the financial requirements for a buyer are:
    1. Net worth (exclusive of residence and personal items) totaling the greater of:
      1. 50% of the total purchase price of the transaction, or
      2. $75,000
    2. Operating Capital (liquid assets available after the purchase of the franchise) totaling the greater of:
      1. $25,000, or
      2. 33% of fixed and semi-variable expenses, including debt service, and manager salary not to exceed $40,000
  2. If two years or less remain on the existing lease, the financial requirements for a buyer are:
    1. Net worth (exclusive of residence and personal items) totaling the greater of:
      1. 75% of the total purchase price of the transaction, or
      2. $75,000
    2. Operating Capital (liquid assets available after the purchase of the franchise) totaling the greater of:
      1. $50,000, or
      2. 50% of fixed and semi-variable expenses, including debt service, and manager salary not to exceed $70,000.

Note 1: If proposed buyer is an existing Dairy Queen® or Orange Julius® franchisee, ADQ may consider making limited exceptions to the above minimum financial requirements.

Note 2: ADQ may consider approval of a buyer who is a family member or who has been a store manager for at least two years but does not meet the minimum financial requirements, provided that seller is in good standing with ADQ and will guarantee the financial obligations of the buyer. This guarantee would last until the buyer has gone at least 3 full years (36 straight months) without being late on Store Monthly Reports or delinquent in Accounts Receivable to ADQ. The guarantee could also end sooner if, at any time, the buyer can meet the then-current financial requirements for a franchise transfer.
